The mobile-first knowledge delivery approach is a design and development strategy that prioritizes the creation of digital content and experiences for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, before adapting it to larger screens and devices.

As an Instructional Designer, implementing this approach can greatly enhance the learning experience for your audience. The mobile-first knowledge delivery approach is critical if your learners will consume the training on their mobile devices.
Hi, I am Lokesh and in this video, we’ll review some strategies to consider when implementing this approach:
- First, prioritize content presentation for small screens. With space restrictions on smaller screens, it’s important to ensure that the most critical elements are prominently displayed. This means prioritizing content and presenting it in a clear and concise manner.
- Second, design and provide instructions for touch instead of clicks. Mobile devices are primarily touch-based, so it’s important to design with this in mind. This means using larger buttons and links, and ensuring that interactive elements are easily accessible. Also, any instructions that you provide asking learners to click or interact with an element, also instructs them to touch the screen. For example, instead of writing: CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD, you can consider writing, CLICK OR TOUCH HERE TO DOWNLOAD. Such instructions can make learning consumption device agnostic.
- Third, keep the design, interactions, and presentation simple. Mobile users often have shorter attention spans and are more easily distracted. Keeping the design simple and easy to navigate can help keep learners engaged.
- Fourth, use multimedia to keep the learners hooked. Mobile devices are great for consuming multimedia content such as videos and images. Incorporating these elements into your design can help make the learning experience more engaging.
- The fifth tip is to test the course on multiple devices. Mobile devices come in all shapes, sizes, and resolutions. So, it’s important to test your design on multiple devices to ensure that it looks and functions as intended.
- Finally, if you can work around the technology, provide an audio-only mode for course consumption. In addition, write your narration, such that even if a learner listens to the narration, they have an effective learning experience. LinkedIn learning’s mobile app does this in an effective manner. This can be a boon for auditory learners or for those who prefer to take the training while doing activities, such as walking, travelling, or working out. This strategy is also helpful if a learner wants to recall the key points from the course while doing some other activity.
I hope these tips help you in designing learning solutions for mobile. If you like this content, please subscribe to our channel, and check out the links in description that share information about our enterprise learning services and Instructional Design courses on Udemy.
