Are you an instructional designer or eLearning professional who wants to create content that is accessible to everyone, including people with color vision deficiencies?
It can be hard to understand what it’s like to be color blind if you don’t have this condition. However, assessing your diagrams, graphics, and visuals for color blindness is essential when using colors to identify, highlight, or differentiate visual elements on the screen.
For example, if you use statements like, “refer to the diagram section highlighted with a red box,” you may confuse a learner with color vision deficiencies.
Fortunately, there’s a tool that can help you gain a better understanding of how your images or visuals will appear to someone with this deficiency.
In this blog/video, I’ll introduce you to the Color Blindness Simulator or COBLIS, which can give you a glimpse into how people with color vision deficiencies see the world.
To access the simulator, visit color-blindness.com, then access the Tools menu and open the simulator. Note that the simulator’s location may change as the owners of the tool may update the site.
One of the best things about the Color Blindness Simulator is that it works by evaluating the images on your computer. This means that none of your images will be uploaded to a server, and you can use images of any size. This ability reduces our worries about managing our learning materials’ confidentiality.
Next, to use the Color Blindness Simulator, click the Choose File button, to attach an image. Alternatively, you can drag, and drop it into the center of the simulator. You can then play around with the settings to see how the image looks with different color vision deficiencies. You can also zoom in and move the image around with your mouse.
Note that the simulator works fine in any browser except Edge and Internet Explorer.
This tool can help you create eLearning content that is accessible to a broader audience and ensure that everyone can benefit from your courses and materials. So, go ahead and try out the Color Blindness Simulator for yourself and see how it can help you to create more inclusive content.
