Being in the eLearning industry for over 20 years, I’ve seen us evolve from delivering Computer-based Training on CDs to AR/VR learning experiences. In between these, microlearning has come and enabled us to deliver short and effective
learning experiences. However, all microlearning is not effective or necessary.
Here are the red flags that signal delivering training via. microlearning might do more harm than good:
🚩Misplaced Brevity: Microlearning is powerful, but not all topics fit into bite-sized lessons.
If a complex subject is chopped up just to keep lessons short, without considering the depth needed, that’s a red flag. Learning isn’t just about time; it’s about applying.
🚩 Lack of Cohesion: Imagine trying to solve a puzzle with pieces from different boxes.
You will never solve it. The same goes for microlearning. Each course should connect smoothly to the next, building knowledge step by step, thus supporting storytelling. Disjointed microlearning courses in a curriculum leave learners
confused and disengaged.
🚩 Missing Roadmap: A visual learning path is essential, showing where each course fits in the bigger picture.
Without it, learners can’t see their progress or know what to tackle next.
🚩 Lack of Practical Application: Microlearning should be about applying what you learn.
If there’s no way for learners to practice or see how it’s relevant to their work, that’s a red flag.
🚩 Ignoring Feedback Loops: Ensuring learning experiences are relevant and effective requires you to keep the feedback loop open.
