Hi, I’m Lokesh and in this short video, we’ll introduce and define the difference between Formative and Summative assessments.
Importance of Formative and Summative Assessments in Instructional Design
Formative Assessment happens DURING the learning process. For example, intervention and feedback by instructors during a class is an instance of Formative Assessment. Think of it as a GPS map, guiding learners on their learning journey. On the other hand, Summative Assessment evaluates what learners know AFTER the instruction. Picture it as a destination sign showing that you’ve arrived at your destination. Both assessment types are vital for an effective learning experience.
One guides the journey, while the other gauges the outcome. Together, they help you to design effective and engaging learning experiences.
As an Instructional Designer, you must design your courses to ensure a relevant distribution of Formative and Summative assessments. This will keep the learners engaged, provide them with timely guidance, and let them evaluate what they’ve learned.
