In this video, let’s examine what is Scaffolding Learning.

A scaffold is used in the construction industry to support workers when they work at elevation.

This strategy has been adapted by the L&D industry by:

  1. First identifying the current level of the learners’ skills or knowledge
  2. Next, assigning them activities to challenge them, which they are unlikely to perform without a scaffolding support from the instructor or the presentation in a self-paced course
  3. Finally, after the learner can perform the activities independently, they can move to the next level of learning or be presented the next scaffolding challenge.

Scaffolding is a very niche strategy that should be adopted when the learners are advanced and motivated for learning by challenge. So, know your audience and their motivations before including learning strategies inspired by scaffolding.
